A few weeks ago, the annual Close Up trip took place, where eight students got to spend a week in our nation’s capital. Close Up is a class offered to students in grades eleven and twelve, where they are able to learn all about our government and how it works. Alongside this, the students go on to spend 5 days in Washington, D.C., where they can learn and experience all that the city has to offer. Senior Katherine Campbell, who attended the recent D.C. trip, says, “My favorite part of the trip was spending the day on Capital Hill, and meeting Minnesota members of Congress : Amy Klobuchar, Tina Smith, and Betty McCollum. I loved getting to see the government in action, and imagine a future career for myself in public service”. Her perspective highlights the interactive, and enriching experience of the Close Up trip.
Some specific highlights of the trip include the group’s trip to the Air and Space Museum, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, and many other amazing locations in the city. At the Air and Space Museum, students got to learn about the history of airplanes in America, how planes were made during World War II, and some other cool facts about technological advances over the last few decades. While at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, students were able to reflect on the events that took place during the war, and the tremendous impact this war made on the lives of so many Americans. All in all, this trip was an incredible opportunity for students to experience, as it enriched the students with new information and immersed them in the history of our nation’s capital.
