This year, the annual Guatemala mission trip was a huge success. Many seniors attended, accompanied by three staff members. Students were able to immerse themselves with the Guatemalan culture, find peace in experiencing a distraction-free way of life, and interact with some of the local residents of the town.
“Nicest and happiest people I have met in my entire life, it was a life-changing experience hard to put into words.” Anna is a world traveler and has been to other countries like Peru and Mexico, but this trip was different. “It opened my eyes to what geographical luck really is.” -Anna Penz, Senior.
One faculty member who went on the trip said, “My favorite part of the trip was experiencing Guatemalan culture and living within the community of San Lucas. During our time there, life felt simpler and less burdened by distractions, allowing us to be fully present and take in our surroundings and what the mission was teaching us. The local community’s warmth and the mission’s daily rhythm offered a refreshing reminder of the beauty in a more intentional and uncomplicated way of living.” -Mr Beithon. For most of the people on that trip, they came back with a new perspective on life and culture.
The trip was with the San Lucas Mission, which is a group of other volunteers from around the world. The San Lucas is a community-led initiative focused on development through health, education, construction, and agriculture. A majority of volunteers are there for more than three months, sometimes more than a year. CDH volunteers were there for ten days.
