This year for the Cretin-Derham Hall winter blood drive, there was an incredible turnout from both student and faculty volunteering. When it came to the blood donated, volunteers amounted to 48 whole blood pints and 11 double red pints. Every volunteer has to be 16 years old to donate, but those who couldn’t donate blood were still there to help out. Some volunteers worked in the canteen which was filled with popular snacks and drinks for those donating and volunteering. Cookies, juice, and soda were stacked along the tables of the Joe Mauer Field House.
Mrs. Sorenson said, “This year’s blood drive was a huge success, with an impressive number of walk-in and first-time donors. My favorite part of the blood drive is when these first-time donors reflect on their experience and say they wish they weren’t scared to donate at past drives – it’s rewarding for them to overcome their fears AND save lives!”

Mrs. Sorensen is the head faculty member of the service subcommittee of CDH’s Student Council. The Service committee is in charge of planning the winter and spring blood drives, and The winter and spring blood drives are typically led by two student volunteers from a CDH student council committee. This year it was Katherine Campbell 26’ and Joseph Massari 27’. Katherine was also in charge of the drive last year, so she already had the experience. The blood drive ran very smoothly thanks to the student volunteers keeping everyone on track!
