Cretin-Derham Hall has many traditions, and a highlight every year are the blood drives. Taking place twice a year; once in the winter and once in the spring; the Winter 2024 Blood Drive was a resounding success.
Ms. Sorenson has helped lead it for the last two years and says its a, “tradition older than my experience.”
With the help of two senior leaders from the student council service committee, the blood drive always runs smoothly. This year Emily Boss ‘25 and Bauer Houge ‘25 took their turn leading the winter blood drive. They went through training, creating advertisements, and showcasing the importance of the annual blood drive. The student council plays a vital role in marketing for the blood drive. Some make presentations to show to classes, even values classes. Although they are too young to participate, the freshmen can be educated for future interest. Memorial Blood Center does the bulk of the work, some showing up at 6am to prepare for the long day.
When asked, Ms. Sorenson says that this timeless tradition is so important because, “It gives service and volunteering. It builds community, creating lasting relationships.”
This year was a great success for CDH. Last year, there were 65 donors, making it the targeted goal for this year. CDH surpassed the goal during the Winter blood drive, having 87 sign up and 79 donate. CDH was able to save potentially 222 lives, an astounding accomplishment. Although it’s strongly encouraged to donate, donors must be of at least 16 years of age and be able to stay awake for the duration of the blood draw. If you can’t donate or choose not to, you can always choose to volunteer to help throughout the day. Although some jobs also have age restrictions, there is a place for everyone. The blood drive is just one of the ways CDH makes action towards caring for their community. Possibly saving a life is not something everyone can say they have done.
